Well last weekend saw me jet down to Victoria to attend the Warrambeen Film Festival to watch my short film A Problematic Delivery. It was just me by my lonesome, but I made the effort to get down there as I wanted to get as impartial a reaction as I could find…and that I did. The location itself was on the Warrambeen Landcare Education Centre, an immense bit of old heritage farmland, complete with heritage buildings. I got there early afternoon, and could only stay for a few hours before having to get back to Melbourne, so I didn’t get to see all the films there, and was there before the main crowd arrived.

Being a regional festival, I was amazed at the quality of the other shorts. Some came as far afield as Spain. My short was the last in the adult oriented “block” of 6 other short films. There were a few comedys, and a couple of dramas. Mine came last in the block and I have to stay, it started with a bit of trepedation. Not because everyone would now see my short, but because it followed one of the most soul destroying dramas ever! I was a little worried to say the least, that there would be no energy left for my short. Indeed 1 min in, and there were no laughs. For a 3 min short film, this was bad…

However, as soon as we got to the dialogue scene, my fears were allayed. Everyone busrt into laughter, and I have to say I got a nice ego boost (those of you who know me are probably thinking it’s big enough already). It was an awesome feeling that it was my short film making them laugh. In fact it got the biggest laugh out of the other comedies which was cool.

Overall, a good experience, albeit a little bittersweet as I am not 100% happy with the final version anyway. Although, even with future projects, maybe I never will be…

Warrambeen Film Festival…

Found some great news out today. My short film “A Problematic Delivery” (viewable at the bottom of this page) has been selected in the Warrambeen Film Festival, in Victoria, Australia. Great news indeed, as this is my first film festival acceptance in Australia and gives me the opportunity to go down and see it in front of an audience to hopefully learn something from their reaction. I’d be a fool if I thought it’s the best short ever written, but I think we did a great job considering our low budget restraints and that all who worked on the film fall within the “pro-am” class and aren’t really that active in the industry. We are working towards that however, and I do hope that this means that I continue to develop and learn as a filmmaker.

Details below, maybe I’ll see you there…:

“A Problematic Delivery”, our entry for the Australia Post 200 Seconds was disgarded like a cheap plastic knife and fork in the face of extremely competitive and pretty damn good short films. The winner was Delivery for Mr Droste. Congratulations to the winners who get to attend the AFI awards and have their short screened in front of pretty much the entire film industry.

Of course I never expected our short to win, but using competitions for completion deadlines is a great way to make short films to a schedule rather than dragging them out. My next task is to now narrow down the immense number of short film festivals in the world to begin submitting to in the hopes to be screened at one. Fingers crossed.

Our entry for the AusPost 200 seconds comp is in the ‘featured’ section of the website. I guess this means we at least met all criteria!. Yay! As we await judging, I can’t help but notice the number of views the short has gotten at this date the 7th September, not via youtube, but via the AusPost website itself. 2. Eat your heart out chocloate rain dude.

For the 2009 Australia Post 200 seconds film competition, we here at Nature Of The Beast Films have completed a fairly decent short I believe.

The competition (run as AusPost celebrates it’s 200th birthday) criteria is to produce a short film no longer than 200 secs and feature a parcel of some shape and size. Below is the link to youtube where it sits waiting to be judged by industry judge types.
