Funding. As I’ve said before, it’s the next step for me. It will help make my projects see the light of day and have a lifespan, rather than die a cold death on youtube. Enter IndieGoGo! An amazing website setup to help projects obtain fan funding. A kind hearted person interested in a particular story can donate money to help the production, and be rewarded with some great prizes upon completion of the project.

For our experimental, I have attempted to jump on board the bandwagon:

Camera Test

Yesterday saw myself and Gavin Rawlings of gavinrawlings.com.au fame meet up in Blacksmiths, NSW for a camera test to determine which camera would best suit our purposes in our external location. One such camera is the Canon 7d. I am a recent owner of the Canon 7d HD-DSLR, a new breed of DSLR cameras with the ability to shoot full 1080p HD video and have been brewing up a storm in both the indie and professional camps alike.

I am a HUGE fan of this camera, due to its low-cost, video capabilities, and it’s ability to take any kind of lens you would have to give you immediate depth of field control. However, primarily being produced as a stills camera, there are some downfalls such as aliasing, lower recording bit rates, etc. What myself and Gav wanted to do was put the 7d through its paces as our experimental short will feature a large amount of movement and tension.

Gav wandered in first…..Gav walks in to the abyss...

Once done, we also had a play with Gav’s EX-1, so that we could evaluate which was best for our outdoor environment:

We will post the footage taken as a comparison, so you can follow how we arrive at our decision. Once we knackered ourselves out by running around, we got on to another key issue for our short….stereoscopic filming. I mentioned in an early blog here the type of feel we were trying to replicate. Very trippy. And also very tricky. Our rig was simple, two EX-1s side by side on a nice & sturdy tripod. Again, once we have worked through the footage, we will post the results.

Moving Along…

Just returned from another creative meeting with Gav about our upcoming experimental. Gav and myself will co-direct, which will be interesting to see whether we’ll be able to stand each other by the end of it! I’m starting to write a synopsis and will post soon so you know what its about. In the meantime, here are some location scout pics snapped by 1st AD Evan Drinkwater. The outdoor scene is to be foreboding and sinister, very Tim Burtonesque trees no?:

Had a nicely productive meeting with Gav Re: The Experimental.

The project is quickly turning into a bigger one than originally planned, aiming to run between 5-10mins long, but with the kind of story we will be trying to tell, that is not a bad thing. We plotted our thoughts onto paper so we can move towards a completed script over the next few weeks.

Our minds on paper.

New Stuff Is Cool Stuff

Well, A Problematic Delivery is still on YouTube and is still under consideration for the Aus Post 200 seconds filmmaking comp. I have now rested enough to begin my next project, a little experiment with a man with a superb cinematic eye and who I am lucky enough to call friend & DOP, Gavin Rawlings. He likes to look at the sun alot:

The idea was to test a few new camera techniques that we are interested in, to potentially incorporate them into future films.

In particular the use of a SnorriCam and stereoscopic filmmaking. Should be interesting…
