As expected, I was not one of the finalists for Your Big Break. Those 5 lucky people that were selected are now in New Zealand in the pre-production stage of their film. It will be interesting to see the finalists films and even more interesting to see which one Peter jackson will go for to pick the winner. Good luck to them all! Bastards. Follow the winners via this blog.
Moving ahead, and as mentioned previously, I am looking at going for my first official film funding. First Break is part of a film initiative run by Metro Screen NSW. I hope to get said funding with a script, currently named “Observe”:
Synopsis –
Lars is a mobile CCTV van operator and silently observes the area. Megan works as a waitress in the location Lars operates. The two have never had conact, but Lars is infatuated with her. He often takes opportunistic photos of her, imagining them together, chuckling over footage of her spilling water accidentally over a customer.
When following Megan, Lars inadvertantly scares her, causing her to run into the path of a passer-by. Megan drops a purse and newspaper she was carrying. Lars stops following, and picks up the purse she left behind.
The next morning, as Megan goes to leave her house, she is greeted by a picture of the purse. The picture shows the location it was taken, with a street sign also visible in the photo. Upon investigation at the street sign in the photo, Megan finds another picture. And so begins a trail, back to the centre of town and the cafe where Megan works and with each picture Megan finds, she is spurred on to find both the purse and the stranger leaving the photos. Once led back to the cafe, Megan finds Lars and the purse waiting for her at his van. Lars presents her with the purse, and they have a brief moment together. Megan, now with the purse, heads in to work, and Lars goes back to his position of observing from the CCTV van.
He goes back to the footage he took of Megan the day before, but notices something that wasn’t immediately evident. Whilst Megan is wiping up the spill of water over a customer, her other hand is rifling through the gentleman’s pockets. She removes it, along with the man’s wallet. Lars is shocked, thinking to the day before. He scrubs forward to Megan walking into the path of the passer-by and again, her hand goes into the handbag of the lady and out comes the purse that was dropped when Megan was scared by Lars. Lars is left with a decision. What does he do with the tape of the crime? The story ends with this question.
A great opportunity, but decisions on funding will not be made until March. Plenty of time to work on my experimental thriller….
